OUR REFLECTIONS
Finally, we have finished our statistics project!
Right from the start, we discussed how to do about this blog, which sampling to used, how to collect data, until the last step: analyze using SPSS. Throughout the whole process, i have a better understanding of this module (statistics) instead of just learning the theory part.
Initially i thought our topic is not so interesting. But as this is a practice of how the 'real picture' of this module looks like, we have experienced it together, i really appreciated it. Maybe our project is not perfect, but all of my team mates had put in efforts in doing this project, i would like to say 'thank you' to all of them. Thanks a lot friends!
At last, i hope that others will enjoy reading our blog. ^^

Finally we've done up our statistics blog! Yeah!
Yes, a lot to learn from this real foreign module. At first we were so lost..well, at least I am..haha..but thanks to all my other groupmates..we learn together :)) Now putting every piece up, our masterpiece is finally done! Warhaha~ Thank God!
Alright it's everyone's hard work..so thank you guys! And to our lecturers :> Thank you!
-Shanning
For this project, I found it's interesting and you must know how to approach to the person you are not knowing.
It' s also has a lot of challenge to us. Because you need to think a lot, like which is independent variable, which is dependent variable. Sometimes i really need to just memorised which is which. But the most important is the process, we worked together and found the answers.
Thank you for all the lectures who are always available and nice to us. Thanks.
-Wen Jing

Having to have a grading blog as one of our ICAs has shocked me.
However, we are able to make do with some of our IT skills and thus,
able to upload this project at blog.
Stats, all I hate this module.
( I mean, every one has some modules that they don't like or like, right?)
At times, I really try to connect but I just could not.
But with the help of some members, they pulled me up and strive for the best.
Thanks, however, it was a good experience.

-Seri

OMG . ! finally we are done with our blogg . THANKS for the hardwork PEople ^^ hey MY FRIENDS , remember the first time we had our stats project outside the tutorial room .

Discussing on which survey we should carry out ? actually we wanted to see if there's any difference of people's BP when sitting and while standing . But, after much consideration we finally picked up the measurement of neck circumference and waist circumference . ok stop the crap . haas .

I'm now more clear of what statistics is all about after having done this blogg . independent and dependent variables and all . really have a clearer picture of what is it now . okok !!!

LASTLY , I would like to thank MS CHIA for teaching and guiding us through and of cos my grp members . CYA !! have funn reading pple [ :

Finally we have finished our statistics. I have learned that good teamwork is needed to finish one project. Especially for this module, whereby we need to go around collecting data and some have to measure, some have to take photos and some have to chart it down.

Thanks to all my group members. With the help of each and every one of u, we are able to finish our task. No matter what obstacles we have faced, we have been through everything together.

Thank you teacher(*Ms Chia) for what you have taught us and we really appreciate.
-Regina

I love Mathematics but Statistics is hard. However, it's a nice shift from our normal Science modules and it gives us a chance to brush up on our rusty calculations.
I have to applaud the teachers in-charge for trying out something different. Grading ICA through this blog. It allows our group to focus all our attention on doing the project and not so much on presentation or practising our individual speeches. It's a nice change.

By carrying out this project hands on, I learnt to apply what was taught in lectures onto real life scenarios.

OUR ANALYSIS

Here is the picture of our data, it consists a total of 30 datas.

In total we have 4 variables, which are : circumference of waist, circumference of neck, sex and the difference between waist’s circumference and 2 times of neck’s circumference.
However, we are only using 2 variables in deciding whether to reject or accept the null hypothesis.
And the 2 variables are:

1) circumference of neck
2) circumference of waist

Since our 2 variables are scales, we decided to use Pearson ‘s R test

Pearson's R test[rationale]: this test is used for analyzing only scale datas.

Before start using Pearson’s R test, we have to ensure that all 4 assumptions are not violated.

Assumption1 states that all observations must be independent of each other
Assumption 2 states that the dependent variables should be normally distributed at each value of the independent variables.
Assumption 3 states that the dependent variables should have the same variability at each value of the dependent variable.
Assumption 4 states that: the relationship between the dependent and independent variables should be linear

From explore, we know that the skewness of both the independent and dependent value are very small. So, it can be considered normally distributed. (assumption 2 is not violated)
Scatter plot are used to check for linearity and homogeneous variance.( Assumption 3 and 4)

Scatter Plot
[rationale]:
1) To ensure our datas are fit for using Pearson’s R test
2) To find the correlation coefficient for measurement of linearity (if there is a relationship between 2 variables, we can find out that whether it is a positive or negative relationship.)

From the graph shown:
1) association of 2 variables is a straight line,it means assumptions 3 and 4 are not violated
2) it is a positive line, indicates a positive relationship

By now, we can start using Pearson’s R

Result:
There is a positive, very strong and significant association between a person' circumference of neck and circumference of waist.

Due to the time constraint, we are unable to upload all the 30 pictures.

The data collection was taken:
VENUE: NYP LIBRARY SOUTH WING
TIME: 1500 hrs
No of datas collected: 30 datas.

Research Question: Relationship Between Circumference Of Neck & Circumference Of Waist

Hypothesis: There is relationship between the circumference of neck & circumference of waist

Null Hypothesis: There is no relationship between the circumference of neck & circumference of waist

Variables:
- Independent: Circumference of neck
- Dependent: Circumference of waist
- Extraneous: Clothings we wear, Position, Action, Gender, Lifestyle

Conceptualisation:
- Neck: Midline between the shoulder and head (* person must be standing upright and looking straight)

- Waist: Midline between the costal margin and above the umbilical

Operationalisation: Measuring Tape

Ethics:
Autonomy
-verbal consent was given and obtained (photos taken will be posted)
-respondents have the rights to reject participation

Sensitivity
-topics chosen require minimal exposure

Confidentiality
-ensuring participants that their data will be kept confidential

Sample Group:
Non-probability Sampling - Accidental Sampling
-rationale of choosing quota sampling:
although accidental sampling is not representative, but it is the easiest sampling method for us to obtain data from all NYP students.

-Nanyang Polytechnic's library was chosen as our venue to collect data, as all students from different school were there, we hope that our data could be more representative

-Rationale of choosing these topics: during a sale, when people want to know if they fit in either pants or skirts, they will measure their neck to see if they fit in to that pants or skirts. This is because they believe that the circumference of the neck is equal to the circumference of the waist.
